Does reverse osmosis water hydrate you?

When we feel thirsty, we want to drink water. This is our natural body need.

When I was little and lived in the countryside, I would play until tired. Then I scooped a big bowl of water from the water tank at home and drank it fast. It could stop my thirst well, and the water tasted a little sweet.

Nowadays, both cities and villages get tap water from the same city water supply system. Strict rules control the water quality in water plants. Take Shanghai as an example. It is a huge city with 23 million people drinking tap water. If there is any problem with the water, it will become a very serious accident. No one dares to take such a big risk.

However, troubles mostly appear in these three parts:

1. Old public water pipes

Many old pipes are made of cast iron or galvanized steel. Rust and dirt cover the inner walls, and thin biofilm grows inside. When pipes break or get fixed, sand and mud flow into the water. In far pipe ends where water moves slowly, chlorine runs out quickly.

The water from the plant is safe, but after traveling a long way in pipes, it may turn cloudy, carry iron dust and grow bacteria.

2. Water storage tanks for high-rise buildings (the biggest problem)

People living in tall buildings can easily feel this problem.

City water pressure only reaches the 6th or 7th floor. Tall buildings need water tanks or pressure cans to store water.

Risks here: Tanks are not tightly closed, seldom cleaned, and still water stays for long. Chlorine disappears, so bacteria and small bugs grow. Different property teams do very different cleaning work.

That’s why people in high floors often find yellow or smelly tap water.

3. Vertical pipes in buildings and water tubes inside your house

Many old buildings have galvanized pipes in stairs, and house hidden pipes turn old too. They keep releasing rust into tap water.

To sum up, tap water at home is not undrinkable. But you don’t want to bet that your house has none of the three problems above. That’s why it is wise to install a water filter at home. You can choose an RO membrane water machine, an ultrafiltration machine, or even a simple filter with activated carbon and PP cotton.

Now let’s talk about today’s question: Can we drink RO water for daily hydration? My answer is YES!

It is true that RO filtered water is not perfect. The RO membrane will filter almost 99% of all substances in water, no matter they are good or bad for people. But for common people, we can never get all needed nutrition and minerals only from drinking water.
